Overview
The Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre is the research hub of De Montfort University's (DMU) Music, Technology and Innovation Department (MTI), a thriving, dynamic programme of undergraduate and postgraduate education and research. We are part of DMU's Faculty of Humanities.
Members
The MTI programme has grown rapidly. In 1999 there was one staff member. As of 2005, there are nine staff members of international origin and repute, a Systems Manager, two Post-Doctoral Research Fellows, two Visiting Professors and one Honorary Professor, and a significantly expanded undergraduate and postgraduate student body. We maintain a positive and relaxed atmosphere of active exchange amongst staff and students.
See the members pages for a glimpse of the highly diverse group of people who research and study at the MTI Research Centre, and access their downloads pages for audio and video samples of their work.
Areas of Activity
MTI Research Centre activites encompass a broad and continually evolving range of artistic creation and theory focused on innovative application of new technologies to music.
Every MTI Research Centre staff member is an active creative artist. Creative works of the staff members cover a diverse range, including acousmatic and tape composition, instrumental and orchestral work, interactive and algorithmic musics, internet-based and collaborative composition and improvisation, music and video composition, installation and sound art, and public art. Many MTI Research Centre members are actively engaged is cross-arts collaborations with other forms of time based art and emerging genres in performance and new media.
This creative practice informs and is informed by an active agenda of electroacoustic music studies research. (Electroacoustic is used here in its most inclusive sense, including relevant forms of innovative popular music.) This research work takes the form of individual research, Centre projects, and international collaborations.
Outreach and Collaboration
A commitment to access and outreach (e.g., community and public art) guides a great deal of MTI Research Centre research. The MTI Research Centre also actively engages both academic and non-academic institutions in collaborations that serve and develop the world of electroacoustic music and the creative and pedagogical culture of MTI. More information on these collaborations can be found on the Projects and Collaborations page.
In the course of its work, the MTI Research Centre enriches its own research culture and serves the broader community by hosting events such as national and international conferences, day-long symposia, and concerts. Our Events pages detail these activities, including numerous downloadable papers and presentations.
Postgraduate Study
We are eager to increase the numbers of postgraduate students taking advantage of the exceptional MTI environment to develop their research, artwork, and careers. Details of our postgraduate programmes reside on this site. We encourage enquiries from prospective students in the UK and from abroad. Feel free to contact any staff members with questions regarding postgraduate study.
Facilities
The MTI Research Centre programme has procured significant financial support, facilitating the creation of exceptional facilities for research, augmented by collaborative arrangements and funding initiatives with other parts of the University. This includes a specialized laboratory for sound diffusion, a fully isolated mixing and project room, a workstation laboratory outfitted for audio, visual, and interactive work, and a professional-grade recording studio. See the facilities page for more details.
